Jessica is what I like to refer to as a ‘Plus-size Instagram model’. She’s part of a growing phenomenon in the BoPo (Body Positive) community. Many women like Jessica are fed up with the standard of beauty as it is presented in the media. These women are posting photos of themselves from head to toe in a variety of styles and attires. They show that women of sizes above – and far beyond – the average dress sizes are both beautiful and attractive!
Jessica is the first in a new series of women I want to feature on this website.
On November 2, 2015, Jessica, who describes herself as a BBW (Big Beautiful Woman), posted her first photo on Instagram. It was a photo of her and her fluffy friend ‘Delilah’. Back then, she used her page like most people, posting about life events, interests, and/or to post the occasional selfie.
For men such as myself, women like Jessica are the epitome of femininity! However, because of the media and society’s skewed beauty paradigm, these women have a hard time feeling beautiful and attractive. It can be challenging to fit in. Because nowadays, if you’re not a size 8, or smaller, you can’t be called “beautiful”, and “attractive”. Ironically, in the US, the average dress size of a woman is a US size 16!
However, none of that deterred Jessica to make a stance and post her plus-sized curvaceous self online. On December 18, 2016, Jessica uploaded her first full-body photo on her Instagram page:
with the following text:
This is me. Top to bottom. Learning to love myself, working hard on being the best me I can be ^^ 40lbs down and feeling fine 🙂
Since that day in December of 2016, Jessica has been posting more and more full-body photos. Her page has now become reminiscent of other women like her who model, as amateur, professional, or semi-professional plus-size model.
I really like Jessica’s work because she maintains a very consistent style. I asked her how she would describe her style. She responded: “I like to call my style a ‘clash of sass and class with a splash of modesty’. It’s important to me that I represent my size well by dressing to impress.”.
We are now – at the time of writing this – in 2018, and Jessica’s accumulated thousands of followers on Instagram. Her journey as a body positive plus-size Instagram model is only beginning. And, I think we will be seeing a lot more of her in the future!
I encourage you to check my interview with Jessica as well.
